Frequently asked questions about our Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) Programs:
What are “partial hospitalization” and “intensive outpatient” programs?
Partial Hospitalization, or PHP, is an alternative to staying the night in a hospital. Youth spend 5 days a week (Monday – Friday 9 am – 2:30 pm) in our program. They see a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist every week, and they receive group, family, and individual therapy.
It’s a way to get in-depth treatment without the safety measures involved in a locked hospital. As a step-down program, PHP also helps transition youth back to the community from a psychiatric hospital or residential treatment. Going from 24-hour treatment to 7 hours/day of treatment allows symptoms to settle further before jumping back into the structure of school or child care. PHP can prevent re-hospitalizations and sometimes prevent going into psychiatric hospitals in the first place.
Intensive Outpatient, or IOP, is a limited and less frequent version of PHP. Youth spend 3 afternoons a week in our after-school program. (Youth IOP runs 4 pm – 7 pm; adolescent IOP runs 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm.) They still receive group, family, and individual therapy, and psychiatry can be arranged in addition.
IOP and PHP help address crises when they are big enough to see but still small enough to solve without hospitalization. Just as youth step down from hospitals to PHP, they often step down from PHP to IOP to monitor and ease the transition back to school.
What are the benefits of PHP for children and adolescents?
PHP helps address crises when they are big enough to see but still small enough to solve without hospitalization. PHP can also reduce the likelihood of future or repeat hospitalizations, which can be detrimental to children and adolescents.
What is your process for assessment and admission, and who is eligible for PHP and IOP?
If your child is struggling with psychiatric, emotional, and/or behavioral issues, and you’d like to learn about admission into our programs, please call 725-237-0080 or email phpintake.coordinator@healthymindslv.com for a no-cost, confidential assessment.
This free assessment can be conducted in-person or over the phone, based on your preferences. During the assessment, our intake professionals will gather the information needed to verify your child’s eligibility, and they will explain the programs’ services to you.
If your child meets criteria for admission and is ready to start, our team will guide your family through the admission process, including verification of benefits.
If your child does not meet criteria for admission, we will refer your family to other professionals or organizations that can help.
How does a patient get referred?
Youth may be referred by their families, friends, physicians, mental health professionals, schools, social service agencies, court officials, insurance case managers, hospitals, and other agencies. Healthy Minds believes in teamwork and will join the team of professionals helping your child now. If your child doesn’t have a team yet, let’s get one started.
How long do your programs last?
Upon admission, your child will have a team of professionals that assesses readiness for discharge every day. Our goal is to help your child and family find the stability needed to return to regular treatment and resume regular life as soon as possible. Typical program duration is 2-4 weeks and depends on a youth’s progress.
How much does it cost?
During our intake process, we help families understand any out-of-pocket expense. The out-of-pocket expense depends on the type of insurance coverage, including copays, deductibles, and co-insurance.
What’s the typical daily schedule of the PHP?
Healthy Minds’ PHP begins at 9 am and ends at 2:30 pm. We mirror school schedules to help with any transition back to school, to make transportation easier for families, and to simplify coordination with schools and aftercare programs.
Each day is designed to include many interventions, including psychiatry as well as individual, family, and group therapy. Young kids often need time and space to burn off energy, so time for play is built into the day. Some youth also need time alone to calm down, so we build in flexibility for kids to calm themselves as needed.
Daily components of our PHP may include:
- Daily group therapy, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy skill acquisition, Trauma Recovery, and coping skills to help with depression, anxiety, and anger.
- Nursing groups with a nursing professional to assist with medication education, physical health, and wellness.
- Daily recreational therapy, which uses activity-based interventions to build health, recovery, and well-being.
- One-on-one contact with specialized psychiatrists 1-2 times a week to monitor progress and medications to properly guide the treatment program.
- Daily educational hour to assist and stay up to date with shortened course assignments.
- Scheduled time in a playroom designated specifically for younger children.
- Flexible scheduling that allows quiet time in a designated calming room if needed for those who need breaks.
- Optional family groups for parents to provide additional support.
Are meals included in the PHP or IOP?
We provide lunch and snacks throughout the day. Breakfast is not provided. Please discuss any dietary restrictions or food allergies with your intake coordinator.
What happens after PHP and IOP?
PHP is a temporary part of treatment designed to stabilize a crisis. Some youth step down to IOP, while others go straight to regular therapy. Our team works with your regular therapist, psychiatrist, and other team members with the goal of keeping your child and family’s connections with existing providers intact. If you do not have a treatment team, we will work with you and your insurance to connect you with resources.
