About Healthy Minds
Healthy Minds is on a mission to raise Nevada’s mental health ranking from 51st to 1st.
Who we are
We’re a diverse group of mental health experts from all disciplines: psychiatry, psychology, social work, marriage and family therapy, and substance abuse counseling. We work together. We guide people through the mental health web. If we don’t have the expertise needed, we find it for our patients.
We take our time. We fight overmedication. We try to work ourselves out of a job by helping patients get to where they don’t need therapy anymore. We build programs that don’t exist in Las Vegas, and we donate to local charitable efforts to build the first non-profit children’s psychiatric facility.
The Problem
Mental Health America’s rankings of the State of Mental Health in America reflect the poor condition of Nevada compared with other states and Washington D.C.. Nevada ranked:
- 49th in access to care;
- 47th in adult mental health;
- 45th in prevalence of mental health issues;
- 51st in youth mental health; and
- 51st in overall health.
These are not easy problems to solve, and the solutions won’t come overnight. It’s going to take teamwork among the mental health professions, public agencies, payers, patient advocacy organizations, and the Nevada legislature. Healthy Minds is dedicated to delivering better results, not just more services.
What we’re doing
Healthy Minds is working in partnership with public, private, and governmental organizations to drive positive, measurable change in Nevada’s mental health care ecosystem.
For example:
- We attract, train, and retain Nevada’s next generation of mental health care professionals in partnership with UNLV’s Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine.
- We offer affordable mental health care using proven treatments for children in foster care, private clients, and people caught up in the legal system.
- We support both nonprofit and for-profit partners who are making high quality mental healthcare accessible and affordable for anyone in Nevada, no matter where they live or how dire their financial circumstances.
When it comes to our practice, we break the mold to ensure our patients always come first. For example:
- We maintain low caseloads for our professionals so we don’t overwork them.
- Licensed professionals only report to other licensed professionals. This means business and patient-care decisions are made collaboratively by licensed professionals with a primary focus on the patients’ interest, not what’s best for the bottom line.
- Our policy of employing professional interns (i.e., 1 licensed to 2 interns) is stricter than the professional licensing boards’ requirements (1 licensed to 3 interns). And we don’t game the system by utilizing off-site supervisors.
